Community Overview, by Nebraska Rural Living

Red Cloud’s place is unique in American and Nebraska history. Celebrated author, Willa Cather’s best-known work, My Antonia, was inspired by the town, the land and the hardy pioneers in Webster County. Red Cloud’s strong literary heritage is juxtaposed with a hunting and farming culture, a theme woven into many of her stories. This short video shows scenes from the town of Red Cloud, Nebraska.

Experience Red Cloud, by Hear Nebraska

Through support from the Center for Rural Affairs, we interviewed young residents in Greater Nebraska to hear what makes their community a distinctly attractive place to live, work and play. This and other Experience Nebraska videos were shot and produced in June 2016, part of the Good Living Tour storytelling project, made possible by Nebraska Department of Economic Development, Humanities Nebraska, Nebraska. This video features Red Cloud locals Lisa Mahin, Jarrod McCartney, and Ashley Olson talking about what makes Red Cloud an attractive place for young professionals.

Ron Hull Remembers: Willa Cather

NET has celebrated the life and literature of Willa Cather in several productions. In the 1960s, Mildred Bennett, author of "The World of Willa Cather," interviewed Carrie Miner Sherwood, Cather's friend from childhood. In the 1970s, NET presented Willa Cather Remembered, in which host and narrator by Ron Hull takes the viewer on a tour of Cather's home of Red Cloud, Nebraska.  

"Yours, Willa Cather" by NETNebraska

"Yours, Willa Cather" is a 30-minute documentary inspired by the recently published Selected Letters of Willa Cather, edited by Andy Jewell and Janis Stout. In "Yours, Willa Cather" we meet the woman who confesses to a friend that she is "paralyzed" by the open spaces of the West. Who is so bored with her job as editor of McClure's that she compares it to living in a "tepid bath." Who believes her boss when he tells her she has no talent as a writer. Who writes to F. Scott Fitzgerald, "After all, the only thing one can tell about beauty, is just how hard one was hit by it. Isn't that so?" 

In Yours Willa Cather we hear a voice very different from the polished and controlled voice of Willa Cather the novelist. Instead we meet a person who is vulnerable, funny and at times, ruthless. A fascinating woman who thoroughly mastered the art of letter writing. 

Nebraska born actress Marg Helgenberger (CSI, China Beach) is the voice of Willa Cather. Author and actor Christopher Cartmill is the narrator.

Acclaimed author Willa Cather grew up in Red Cloud, Nebraska and based many of her characters on real people she encountered in her youth. Today Red Cloud is using philanthropy as a means to invest in the Willa Cather heritage as an important hometown asset.
